Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

Habitat has built over 300,000 homes around the world, providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. HFHI was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife, Linda.

Local Habitat for Humanity affiliates build and renovates houses in partnership with people in need, and then sell the houses to the homeowner partners. Homeowners are selected by local affiliates based on their need for housing, ability to repay a no-profit mortgage, and willingness to partner with Habitat. Mortgage payments contribute to a Fund for Humanity, which in turn provides the money to build more houses. Because of Habitat's no-interest, no-profit loans, and because the houses are principally built with volunteer labor, mortgage payments are affordable for low-income partners.

Lawrence County Habitat for Humanity is Lawrence County Pennsylvania's local Habitat affiliate. LCHFH was organized in 1997 and has completed 17 houses as of January 2010. It is our hope to build one in the Spring and Fall of 2010.
